Highlights of the May 2015 Edition of the Fab Databases

The May 2015 edition of the World Fab Forecast, FabFutures, World Fab Watch, Opto/LED Fab Watch, and the Opto/LED Fab Forecast databases have been published and is available to our existing subscribers. The following are highlights from our World Fab Forecast database:

Key Points

Fab Equipment Spending

  • Fab equipment spending in 2015 is expected to grow by about 11% to US$38.7B (was 15% in February report), and 2016 spending is expected to grow 5% to US$ 40.7B (was 3% in Feb report).
  • Most equipment spending in 2015 is for Memory ($17B), followed by Foundry ($14B), and MPU (> $3.3B). In 2016, Memory is at $17.7B, Foundry at $14.7B and MPU is expected to increase to $4.7B.

Installed Capacity

  • Global installed capacity for ICs (without Discretes) is expected to grow 2.7%  in 2015 and 3.0% in 2016.
  • Installed capacity growth in 2015 for DRAM -1%, NAND (inlcuding 3D) 3%, MPU 1% , Foundry 6%. In 2016: DRAM 1.6%, NAND (including 3D) 6%, MPU >7%, and   Foundry 5%
  • There are 27 fabs/lines beginning production in 2015 (including 9 LED, 8 Foundries, 4 Memory, 1 Analog) and 11 fab/lines in 2016 (including 4 Foundries, 4 Memory, 1 Analog)

New Fabs / Fab Construction Projects

  • In 2015, there are 36 construction projects with investment totaling over $5.6B (-31% YoY). In 2016, there are 20  construction projects with investments of over $7.5B (+33% YoY)
  • There are 10 new construction projects beginning in 2015 and 8 beginning in 2016. In 2015: 4 for Memory, 2 Foundry, 2 Discrete, 1 Logic and 1 TBD. In 2016: 6 Foundry, 1 Analog, and 1 Logic.

Activity Report

  • Since last report published end February 2015 we have made 282 updates on 235 facilities.
  • We added 15 facilities (some new, some existing); 14 facilities are noted as either closed, cancelled or merged.
  • The report lists a total of 1167 facilities including 316 Opto & LED related facilities.
  • There are 64 future facilities with various probabilities which have started or will start volume production in 2015 or later.
  • The report lists major investments (construction projects and equipping) for 220 facilities and lines in 2015 and about 188 in 2016.
